Isabel and her classmates are captivated with the notion of someday working for a television station.

A media exploration tour of The NFL Network was a step toward realizing that dream. Glover Cleveland High students got a peep behind the scenes of the NFL Network. Including a live broadcast of “Total Access.”

“I got much inspiration from this tour and plan pursue this as a career. Especially behind the scenes instead of in front of the camera,” said Isabel.

Stephen James, founder, CEO at Eyes Wide Open Foundation, organized the tour in collaboration with the Los Angeles Unified School District and NFL Network.

His aim is to propel high school students into sports media jobs, particularly students of color.

“It’s all about diversity, inclusion and getting kids exposure to this industry,” says Stephen.

Fifteen students engage network professions and discuss their own aspirations.

Among the NFL Network staff in attendance was Senior Manager Studio Environmental Health & Safety Linda DeYampert.

DeYampert explains how important this tour is for the students and the sports entertainment industry too.

“As a person of color I’m eager to see young people thinking outside the box. We need the their passion about sports,” says Linda.

Stephen worked at the NFL Network for more than six years and agrees with Linda. “It’s all about diversity, inclusion” and getting kids exposure to this industry. I took 8 months of planning and discussions with Linda before Stephen finally received an approval for the tour. Now they are discussing 6 more visits over the next year.

The impact of the tour was immediate. One student inquired about applying for an internship and employment.

Cleveland High senior Michael Duffy was impressed with how the NFL Network professions execute their jobs.

Michael’s most memorable take away was “how important it is to make your own opportunities and build relationships.”

Congressman Adam Schiff and members of SAG-AFTRA are calling for immediate measures to control the proliferation of so-called “deepfake” technology.

“Deepfakes” are essentially videos that use a to realistic digital forgery of videos or audio created with cutting-edge artificial intelligence that misrepresent another person.

This rapidly evolving technology is becoming more realistic and could signal next wave of attacks on politicians.

Congressman Adam Schiff attended a SAG-AFTRA panel where he acknowledges how foreign adversaries, like Russia, could present “deepfake” videos online to influence the upcoming presidential election or cause riots in a major city.

“The applications are as varied as the imagination,” says Congressman Schiff. “This discussion has opened me eyes to a whole lot of issues and problems.”

Panelists discussed the emerging threat of “deepfakes” in the midst of a misinformation war where the rules of engagement have no boundaries.

Another panelist Dr. Hany Farid, Professor at UC Berkeley, says “there is a lack of respect for the truth.” The digital forensics expert adds, “we must start thinking about digital literacy and that includes the next generation of consumers, how to threat people online and how you consume news online.”

An example of “deepfakes” is a video of former President Barack Obama created by filmmaker Jordan Peele. He created the video as a public-service announcement warning about the danger of deepfakes.

One of the two actors on the panel and SAG-AFTRA member Heidi Johanningmeier echoed the sentiment of the panelist and many in attendance “we need to respect one another.”

Special counsel Robert Mueller’s highly anticipated report continues to raise more questions than answers. Two counter terrorism experts shared their expertise and analysis to provide somme clarity the special councel’s report.

Although Special Counsel’s Russia probe is over MSNBC Analysis Malcolm Nance and national security expert Professor Dr. Erroll Southers are convinced without a doubt the FBI is almost certain to continue its counterintelligence investigation into Russian espionage efforts related to the 2016 election.

During a forum hosted by University of Southern California Sol Price School of Public Policy the counter terrorism experts discussed the 448 page document and concluded a pattern of misbehavior exhibited by the president and key figures related to his 2016 presidential campaign.

Nance and Southers assessment underscore what we now know about the extent of Russians’ ploys used to insinuate themselves into the voting structure of an immensely political divided county.

The Report also reveals the national security threat to the United States by Russia’s 2016 disinformation campaign.

The redacted Mueller Report chronicles a series of activities that show strong evidence of collusion. Mueller’s team of investigators also established a detailed political case against President Trump.

It also outlines instances that suggest President Trump actively sought to undermine Mueller’s investigation.

Nance gave a historical account of the rise to power of Russian President Vladimir Putin and his tactics to diminish Americans confidence in its government. He said the Russian tampering “did influence the 2016 election” and was a multi year operation that started long before 2015.
After a 22-month investigation, the Mueller team found there was insufficient evidence to establish that President Trump or his associates engaged in a criminal conspiracy with Russia to disrupt the 2016 election. However the investigation found numerous contacts between Trump’s campaign and Russians. The report detailed the president’s efforts to stymie the investigation. It also described how investigators debated whether the episodes amounted to criminal obstruction of justice.
The scope of Mueller’s report covers an investigation lead by a team of federal prosecutors and that resulted in 37 indictments and seven guilty pleas. Several of the cases related to the special counsel’s probe are ongoing and have been turned over to prosecutors in U.S. Attorney’s offices.
Dr. Southers said the Mueller report is a product of an “incredible talented team of investigators and prosecutors.”

For the most part the audience seem fascinated with the analytical data being discussed.

“Information is the greatest disinfectant,” said Nance. He encouraged those in attendance to be curious read the report and come to their own conclusions.

Geneva Walker has lived on the streets for 12 years. She scheduled a meeting with the Pasadena Outreach Response Team (PORT) at the Lake Avenue overpass. As the team arrived, Geneva had an epiphany.

“ I want to get off these streets,” she said. “These streets are beating me up. I want to change my life.”

In deed this was an astonishing revelation to PORT because the meeting was supposed to be a routine check-in. For several months Geneva was an advocate for the program. She often encouraged those living on the streets of Pasadena to seek the assistance of PORT.

Geneva was kick her out of the house at age 21 along with her infant son. She remembers pushing him around the streets in a grocery basket.

Currently she has three children ages 21, 18 and 15.

Geneva says her life is broken.

A month ago she was hospitalized for injuries resulting in a concussion. Furthermore she suffers from bipolar disorder, high blood pressure and alcoholic addiction.

Situations like Geneva are beginning to grab some attention from city officials.

PORT could be key to rebuilding her life and self-sufficiency and a more modest solution to combat homelessness in Pasadena.

Individuals like Geneva often can’t access traditional healthcare. Their condition require urgent treatment or make it difficult for them to wait in a traditional doctor’s office with a lot of people.

PORT concerns itself with quality of life. Its relationship with each person is unique and organic.

In 2018, the City of Pasadena started its community paramedicine program. The team is comprise of a social worker, firefighter, nurse and case manager.

“We’re everything to these people,” says firefighter Tony Zee.
PORT is a collaboration between the Pasadena Fire Department, Pasadena Public Health Department and funded by Funded by the Sustain Abuse Mental Health Services Administration.

Since its inauguration in fall 2018, PORT has enrolled 107 individuals. In fact the services include outreach, intensive case management, basic health screenings, linkage to housing programs and other supportive services.

Division Manager Angelica Palmeros is the architect of PORT. She says, “assisting the fire department and bringing down the 911 calls” is the primary goal of her team.

Palmeros suggests the grant money “delivers the service for the client” and shifts the perception of how first responders approach the homeless population. She adds, “PORT provide a network of support these individuals don’t have.”

According to the City of Pasadena 2018 Homeless Count 677 people experienced homelessness. There are a variety of things that contribute to homelessness. A shift in demographics not only in regard to gender but also age is also a key factor.

Michael Johnson, director of Pasadena’s Public Health Department, said “homelessness is a public health issue.”

Pasadena Fire Chief Bertral Washington indicates the goal from the fire department’s perspective is trying to make a positive difference in the homeless population. “It’s normal for fire fighters to be part of the solution to the homeless crisis in Pasadena.”

The PORT crew follows up with patients to help curb subsequent unplanned ambulance usage, reduce superusers, and make emergency resources more available.

PORT aims to reduce emergency call volume by applying a fire prevention model to an ever-increasing emergency call volume. It allows first responders to share data and experiences with public health clinicians.

Chief Washington concludes “if PORT can decrease the demands for our services we save the taxpayers money.”

For more information on PORT contact the Pasadena Public Health Department Social and Mental Health Division at (626) 744-6339.
